<span style="font-family: Calibri;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">School visits to our woods are becoming a fairly usual
occurrence these days, and so when our friends at Lorton Primary rang to say
they’d like to come out for a 50 things day at Holme Wood in Loweswater, of
course we said yes, and then we looked at the numbers! This wasn’t going to be
easy but was certainly doable with a bit of slick timing and a fairly flexible
plan, a quick plan was cobbled together and Rangers Dan ,Paul and Mark talked it
through got the kit together and hoped for fair weather amongst the thunder
storms of previous days.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The morning arrived
and before even getting to the wood the children, and staff with parent
helpers, had already completed one of the tasks, to take a long walk! Our
narrow lanes weren’t suitable for the school buses so the day started with a
1.3 km hike along the farm track, where the mobs of lambs took minds of the
long walk, and made it a tad slower as well!</span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Once on site we split into groups with Ranger Dan taking
charge of the younger kids who set off pond dipping, we didn’t actually have a
pond, the lake had to suffice. They would follow us, using a treasure map and
making a stick trail on the way.</span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Rangers Mark and Paul led the rest of the group in to Holme
wood, where after a swift talk about the day and a bit of health and safety we
split again, Paul taking 2 groups off den building whilst Mark’s group set
about lighting fires without matches, and then cooking marshmallows and trying
out the rope swings over the lake.</span><br />

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">We’d had to time each session to about 30 minutes, necessary
in order for everyone to have a go at most tasks but we needn’t have worried,
the quality of den building was impressive with some very sturdy examples and
some good innovative designs being created well within time, really good to see
how the builders organised themselves and got a system going, and all with the
smell of roasting marshmallows drifting through the woods.</span></div>

wonderful mini beasts , using magnifying glasses and work sheets to identify
their captures.</span></div>

being done, den building, rope swings, map reading, going on a<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>long walk, cooking on a campfire, after
lunch we have mud pies, climbing trees out over the lake, slack lining, dam
building, pooh sticks and grass trumpets, we need a snack for sure.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Calibri;">The afternoon sessions flew by with everyone having had a go
at everything, the long walk back to the buses was accompanied by varying
degrees of grass trumpet playing and laughter, it was as once again brilliant
to hear our woodlands filed with giggles, both from the kids and the staff and
parent helpers, who it must be said were excellent we really couldn’t have
managed the day without their help, Thank you.</span></div>

Most of our blog posts deal with the day to day tasks involved in keeping our countryside in tip top condition, occasionally we have some fun and occasionally we even touch some hearts!<br />
A few weeks ago we took some children from Ennerdale Primary School on a very <a href="http://ntnorthlakes.blogspot.co.uk/2013/10/mini-mountains-should-have-mini.html" target="_blank">wet and windy hike up</a> Rannerdale Knotts, on the day we were impressed by the positive attitudes of the children who smiled and laughed all day despite the horrendous conditions, how lovely therefore for us to receive some letters thanking us for being there with them, definitely worth sharing their thoughts on what was a truly fantastic day<br />

We have always had connections with local schools and are keen to help get the children outdoors and closer to nature, well this week the children from Ennerdale & Kinnisde School got a wee bit closer to nature than they might have intended<br />

I’ll hand over to our guest blogger Becky to give you her impression of the day<br />
<br />
“As an outdoor events intern I have been able to do so much with the National Trust in the last six months and I’ve found how much I enjoy being outside whatever the weather. That definitely came in handy on Wednesday when I went out with Rangers Paul and Dan and Ennerdale School up Rannerdale Knotts<br />

<br />
The weather was magnificent, in the almost blown off your feet and wet enough to make a duck think twice about going out kind of way. It definitely proved the saying that ‘there is no bad weather, just bad clothes’ as we were mostly kept dry and warm by our waterproofs. We had truly fantastic views as the clouds moved, showing us the fells and then hiding them again. At one point we could see the rain shadow hurtling towards us over Crummock Water and making the fells behind almost disappear. <br />
The Ennerdale kids were fantastic, as Paul said; ‘mini mountains should have mini mountaineers’ and that’s definitely what we had. I don’t think I heard a single moan about the weather, even from the littlest.<br />

We'd like to thank the children, teachers and parents, and of course Becky for giving Ranger Dan and I, a cracking if wet day out, looking forward to next time. <br />

They are based in Toronto, and so we were able to explore some of the countryside in the region of the Great Lakes. Driving north on Highway 11, you "soon" (in Canadian terms - it is a very, very big country!) enter the fabled land of Muskoka. This is located on the southern edge of the Canadian Shield country. The terrain is very contorted , undulating rather than hilly, glacially scoured outcrops of granite and gneiss largely covered by mixed woodland, harsh, demanding, but softened by a myriad of sparkling lakes. It was the inspiration for the famed "Group of Seven" artists, and many Canadians regard it as the start of the "true" Canada, the edge of the wilderness that stretches up to Hudson Bay and the Arctic Circle. We stayed in a lovely B&B right on the shore of Fairy Lake. Here's a picture of their "dock".<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOzYJtBJ1B7HSKlEaq060xbl9mnJkO5FcYgKEOTAvt_9VKGIk8ZcjbhbO7bf83Jih0usScqCxcwnJJFqxU0syCewyTVjmAURMx6z-en-Q7okcWg8f2gME6fKOEWTVf5wUzaDBi4qqd1s0/s1600/SAM_1352.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOzYJtBJ1B7HSKlEaq060xbl9mnJkO5FcYgKEOTAvt_9VKGIk8ZcjbhbO7bf83Jih0usScqCxcwnJJFqxU0syCewyTVjmAURMx6z-en-Q7okcWg8f2gME6fKOEWTVf5wUzaDBi4qqd1s0/s400/SAM_1352.JPG" width="400" /></a>It was a truly beautiful location, made even more special by the first hints of the onset of the fall; a chilly nip in the morning air, and the subtlest change in the tint of the woodland foliage. One morning, the cold night air had fallen on the warm water of the lake, producing a shimmer of mist, a picture of transcendental loveliness.
I felt very privileged as I stood on the dock trying to capture
the image, but when I looked at the photo I was dismayed to see the
number of other docks, each with their accompanying boathouse. And when I looked at the wider scene, I realised that almost all of the shore of that beautiful lake was in private ownership, and accessible to none but a privileged few. This much loved area has little protection beyond local authority restrictions, and it struck me as being an area that was ripe for some sort of safeguarding, maybe not National Park status, but perhaps a Provincial Park, and yet it has none.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiv8tH35jeP-AAAKP7yz1vrd1lZiCMYj6vZf-TLzau_WAFO1aKE8oi8YeGAR31T8SeIxkCU84ZuAme8cyeYo_-yfUMSm1IHscx7sgvCcUtm1SBJARjngoYcArOd8au-MusZwwmDKGJQBZM/s1600/Brandelhow+winter.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiv8tH35jeP-AAAKP7yz1vrd1lZiCMYj6vZf-TLzau_WAFO1aKE8oi8YeGAR31T8SeIxkCU84ZuAme8cyeYo_-yfUMSm1IHscx7sgvCcUtm1SBJARjngoYcArOd8au-MusZwwmDKGJQBZM/s400/Brandelhow+winter.jpg" width="400" /></a>Then when I got home I started to wonder about our own Lake District. It has only been in the last sixty years that this other ultra special landscape has come under legislative protection. Before that our own Lakeland was in a very similar position to Muskoka. In 1902, Brandelhow Park on the western shore of Derwentwater could easily have followed down the Fairy Lake route. Instead, Canon Hardwicke Rawnsley rallied the troops in the fledgling National Trust, started the first ever National Trust appeal and managed to buy the land on behalf of the nation. Nowadays we all enjoy unfettered access to Brandelhow, one of the quietest, and most beautiful shorelines in the Lake District. Picnicking, walking, boating, a chilly dip, simple pleasures available to all, forever. How much more beautiful would Fairy Lake be if a substantial part of its' shoreline enjoyed that very same principled freedom<br />

<br />
A piece of footpath maintenance at Dunthwaite was a case in point, easy enough job but access to the site is a major problem, so what do we do? well we just use what's already there!<br />
A steep section required some steps to make the ascent easier on the knees, these were constructed by using hazel cut from nearby coppices, easier to get at than carrying in treated timber and to my mind looks much nicer, we'd no sooner finished than we were thanked by a couple on behalf of their aged collie who apparently found it much easier, and we were amazed to then see the dog climb a custom made ramp into the back of a waiting Mercedes!!! ( Ranger Dan is now trying to source similar in order to get me in and out of the landrover more easily)<br />
<br />
A little bit further on, a section of post and rail fencing which prevents our visitors plummeting down a slope to the river Derwent had over the years slowly started to lean over towards the river, on inspection the timber seemed sound so rather than rip it out and replace it we ripped it out and re sited it, standing upright and braced against the slope it should last a good while longer, and to be honest looks much better than a shiny new bit of fence in amongst the old, cheaper too which should please our accountants!<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZxMxA4Bsl1fsUc1eC9ifWTPWogS4P35zOQWMY1PNCPKHW_XUwf1HfmmRGx06EeVMPVbeDTFU8yEi341Z5hIpB-Zf3-jlhIW7dihRcjtR-1MHhU0IlzdG6rMRsDhjD2xxzc8joFhyphenhyphenG-J4C/s1600/Untitled-1+copy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="150" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZxMxA4Bsl1fsUc1eC9ifWTPWogS4P35zOQWMY1PNCPKHW_XUwf1HfmmRGx06EeVMPVbeDTFU8yEi341Z5hIpB-Zf3-jlhIW7dihRcjtR-1MHhU0IlzdG6rMRsDhjD2xxzc8joFhyphenhyphenG-J4C/s400/Untitled-1+copy.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">before and after picture, not a lot different but that's the beauty of the repair</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
Another opportunity to carry out a repair using only what was on site presented itself at Holme Wood in Loweswater where following a very localised storm a stream had burst it's bank deposited a huge amount of debris in the wood and washed out a considerable section of all access path.<br />
On another day we'd simply have got a digger in and rebuilt the bank but not this time, co-incidentally as we were in a wood there were a few trees around, and some of them right where we needed them, Ranger Dan and myself set about felling the trees so they lay across the breached banks forming a structure that we hope will catch silt and debris from future flood events and become a natural dam, and if it doesn't? well we're no worse off, the trees will coppice back up and we haven't spent a fortune, happy accountants again!!<br />

They do say ‘variety is the spice of life ‘ and of late we’ve had our fair share, aside from the seasonal chores which come with the preparation for our summer visitors we’ve had a few diversions, an opportunity to have some work experience students from nearby Cockermouth school gave us a chance to show 3 young people Ella, Cain and Matthew, some of the tasks which go into maintaining a countryside property and it has to be said they threw themselves into it with enthusiasm, one has since asked to come back as a summer holiday volunteer, which of course we have accepted.<br />
<br />
Some of our visitors are more of a challenge than others, most folks are content to visit, enjoy our landscape, perhaps take in some spiritual enlightenment and leave refreshed, a minority of others however seem intent on trashing the place entirely, this past week we’ve been spending most mornings removing rubbish from lakeside fields, broken bottles, cans, barbeques, deckchairs, lots of underpants and general debris!<br />

While this can be quite disheartening, and we do have a’ real’ job to do, there is some hope, one evening we went round the known trouble spots and gave out litter bags, the reception we got was excellent and on the following morning we had perhaps an 80% reduction in the amount of time it took to clear the sites, so to those who took their rubbish home, Thanks!!<br />
<br />
We’re sometimes told we must have the best job ever and some days that’s very true, the end of primary school for some local kids gave us the chance to let them have some fun in our woods, year 6 pupils from both Paddle and Ennerdale schools visited Holme Wood at Loweswater and took part in some of our’50 things to do’ activities including rope swings, den building tree climbing and most popular by far, mud slides!!<br />

Fantastic to once more hear our woodlands filled with laughter although I dread to think what the laundry bills were like afterwards, many of the children were keen to bring their parents and families back to have some more fun, let’s hope we’re around at the time, after all we need playtime too!<br />
<br />
Then it was back to the real job, still fun though, a section of path leading from Pike Rigg to the lakeshore at Buttermere had become seriously eroded due to water damage and increasing traffic from walkers, the most suitable solution was to use stone pitching, a method more usually used in the uplands by the ‘experts’ at Fix the Fells, we think we matched their prowess however?<br />

<br />
One difficulty we had was getting stone to the site, however the recent dry weather gave us a solution, much to the surprise of visitors and particularly photographers, each day Ranger Dan and myself would drive along the lakeshore and at times through the lake itself to access the site.<br />
The new path took shape quickly and has been well received by all who have used it, already it’s looking like it’s been there forever.<br />

<span style="font-family: Arial;">Summer
is now in full swing and the North
Lakes teams are busy with
their summer maintenance. They are also busy with events and one of their main
events is on the horizon. The Derwent Water Regatta is held on the first
weekend of August, the 3rd and 4th. It is a modern day
attempt to resurrect the long held tradition of summer regattas on the lake. The
weekend is action packed with all sorts of fun on the water. From Bath tub racing and Canoe
slalom’s to Viking long boat tasters. There is also a BBQ on both days and
Saturday evening there will be a bonfire. The event is for the whole family to
enjoy. All the action is centred on Crow
Park, the Derwent Water
Foreshore and Friars Crag, and we can guarantee that it will go off with a bang!</span></div>

<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: small;">With this project there were different types of jobs. They included path erosion repairs, cutting back vegetation from the paths, and strimming back bracken. A good spell of weather meant it was time to crack on. The first job was to strim the bracken back on both paths up at Kinn End. So myself and Paul the Ranger Supervisor from Loweswater took on the first part of the task. Instead of carrying the strimmers all the way to the top we got permission from the Forestry Commission to go on there land and gain access nearer to the site.</span><span style="font-size: small;"> </span><span style="font-size: small; mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: small;">With both paths strimmed the barriers at the top and bottom of Kinn End could be changed. Blocking off one path gives it time to recover, whilst the other takes the brunt of this popular route. By alternating the usage of the two paths we can manage the erosion. With the barrier not being changed for some time the locks had siezed up. So with some WD40 on the one lock and bolt croppers on the other that solved that problem.</span> </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: small;">The second part of the project was to repair a step-over stile. Again we were able to gain access to the site by going through Forestry Commission land. This saved us from carrying all the materials and tools up the fell, and we would like to thank the rangers at Whinlatter for their help in this.</span><span style="font-size: small;"> </span><span style="font-size: small; mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;">

This helps open the path up, making it easier for the public to walk, which in turn stops them from making the path wider. We also strimmed the grass, and brambles back that were encroaching on the path. We found that one section of path had started to slip. A simple post and rail revetment backfilled with rocks and soil proved a good “stitch in time” solution. It is always good to catch these problems early, and this will help the path from eroding and washing away.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The pictures below help show a before and after of the path. Joe the foot path supervisor and I took on this part of the project. This grouping of several small jobs into a greater task, is a method that we regularly use.</span></span></div>

They will be joined later in the year by the other three footpath teams to get it boshed! Here's a couple of protected flora you may of seen about on the cumbrian fells.</span><br />

We're holding two open days where you can drop in any time between 11am - 3pm to meet friendly staff and volunteers and find out about our new volunteering opportunities.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Meet new people in the great outdoors through volunteering with us</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
We're launching a new visitor research project this year, to get to know better the visitors who enjoy the countryside we care for, find out what makes them tick, and find out how we can improve their day out in the great outdoors. With no clip-boards in sight, this is a great project for people who want to spend time outdoors in beautiful settings, and who enjoy talking to people and finding out more about their views.<br />
<br />
We also have opportunities in our new enlarged shop & visitor information point on Derwent Water, opportunities in our Volunteer Support Team, helping to improve communication among all the small groups of people who volunteer with us from Keswick to Whitehaven. Plus, for the less outdoorsy among you, there are opportunities to get involved at Wordsworth House & Garden, in the house, cafe, shop and in the garden too.<br />
<br />
We hope you'll drop in and see us - to find out more about the roles, enter your postcode here to find volunteer opportunities close to where you live - <a href="http://bit.ly/VMm8in" target="_blank">Find an Opportunity with the National Trust</a><br />
<br />
The dates & venues are:<br />
<ul>
<li>Sat 16 February - Theatre by the Lake, Keswick. 11am-3pm</li>
<li>Tues 19 February - Wordsworth House & Garden, Cockermouth. 11am-3pm</li>

On the Buttermere side of the property we have Jim ( and Theo) Phil and David, who when he promises to behave is often joined by his much much better half Christine, Borrowdale rangers Andy and Jack are supported by Rod and Robert.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
One day a week may not sound a lot to some people but when we get this team together on a busy project a truly astonishing amount of work, and fun results.On this occasion rangers Dan and Paul were in the last throes of a large hedge laying project at Dunthwaite on what turned out to be a very wet and boggy site.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Hedgelaying is a country craft which has been practised for hundreds of years, Caesar described the process of hedgelaying in detail in 57BC in his Gallic War when he encountered laid hedges in the territory of the Nervii in Flanders, but it is just as relevant today as it always has been. As a hedge grows it becomes more tree like and gaps appear,laying the hedge restores this living boundary and provides an effective wildlife corridor allowing small animals and birds a route from field to field unseen by predators.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

</tbody></table>
<div align="center" class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The downside is that it produces a lot of 'brash' unwanted trees and branches which are removed as part of the process, our preferred method of dealing with this would be to use a mechanical chipper but the wet and boggy conditions prevented this so we reverted to the traditional method, a damn good fire.... or in this case two!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now, you can almost guarantee that if you gather a group of men of a certain age in a field they will all know the 'correct' way to light a fire, some favour diesel and tyres, some like firelighters and some just stick to paper and dry kindling, everyone is correct of course with the proviso that my method is always best, this time we used bags of old jackdaw nests, removed from a barn some months ago and kept for this very purpose.. Forward planning in the NT??? What ever next!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We have mentioned the wet and boggy conditions, what we failed to mention was the steepness of the site, as the morning progressed it became evident that the fire at the bottom of the hill was much more popular but after what seemed a rather extended lunch break everyone gathered at the much larger and beautifully constructed fire at the top.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I was doubtful that we would clear the field that day but this is were our merry band excels, driven by an unwillingness to admit defeat and I suppose the enjoyment of showing us 'young'uns' how it's done, they pulled ,dragged pushed and stumbled until they had gathered every piece of brash from the site, a slow trudge down the field dragging bags of firewood and they were off for a well earned pint, no doubt looking forward to the next Thursday's task........................more hedgelaying and burning!!!!!!!!</div>

<br />
If your new year's resolution was to spend a bit more time outdoors in this beautiful area, and maybe to help make a difference to a charity and to give something back, we might have an opportunity for you.<br />
<br />
We're really excited about a new project that's just starting up. Over the next twelve months we'll be taking a pop-up visitor information tent to popular locations in the Borrowdale and Buttermere valleys and use it to talk to visitors. We want to find out more about what they're doing on their day out and to gather feedback about how we could make their visitor experience better.<br />

I hope
you have enjoyed the blog, following us through our many highs and a few lows.
Our job largely is to help people enjoy there visit to the marvellous countryside
that we care for in the northern Lake District,
and if possible to enhance their experience. So if we fix a gate, or resurface
a path, it gives us satisfaction to know that we are directly making that
experience more enjoyable, even if this can be quite subliminal to the user. Installing
information panels like those at Friars Crag, which, incidentally, are proving
very popular, is an obvious way in which we can go that little bit further to
give people more of an insight into the area. But there are also more subtle
ways. Try checking this out:</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
<a href="http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/borrowdale/history/">http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/borrowdale/history/</a>
. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
So it has been a very good year for us, and we really want
to thank all those people who have helped us in our achievements. All of this
would be so much harder without your help.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="color: blue; font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Let your heart be light.</span></div>

For me
it is a time of appreciation, both of this wonderful area in which I live and
work, but also of the people whom I hold dear. The District is quieter, the
walking offers a bit more solitude, and the break from work allows me to draw
breath, relax and re-focus. During the summer Sue, my partner, and I walked the
Lake District section of the Coast to Coast
walk, and it really refreshed my appreciation of this marvellously varied
landscape which we call home, really brought it home to me what it is all about.
The Christmas break often works the same way, and at the end of the day there
is Hot Chocolate with a dash of rum, and mince pies. I like mine with a full
pastry lid, which I remove, add a liberal spoonful of Cumberland Rum Butter to
the pie, then squash down the lid on top. Yummee! So how do you like yours? </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="color: blue; font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
<span style="font-size: large;">From now on our troubles will be out of sight.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFkyervT-HAJbCR8qXEKUbwWNt-qZS-J9MeJyWs1mFX3Mwka63WgJSm8Oa6Ipshcw7eZvh9tvxRQl2oXH-hp73LyEexuv7dc2u1gcoMlH341d1E4NpjM_AjLNo8pFt1soN-3aFj47hBrQ/s1600/HawseEnd+Railings+013.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFkyervT-HAJbCR8qXEKUbwWNt-qZS-J9MeJyWs1mFX3Mwka63WgJSm8Oa6Ipshcw7eZvh9tvxRQl2oXH-hp73LyEexuv7dc2u1gcoMlH341d1E4NpjM_AjLNo8pFt1soN-3aFj47hBrQ/s320/HawseEnd+Railings+013.jpg" width="320" /></a>Well probably not! During the summer there is always lots of
emergency work where we have to react to an event, either natural or man made.
Sometimes these can be really annoying, but we have to remember that in the
general scheme of things they occupy a tiny proportion of our time, and are
created by a tiny minority of our visitors. As always a big thank you to all
the people who have helped us with these. Also specifically this year our eyes
will be trained on the tree tops, for from springtime onwards we will be
looking out for signs of Ash Dieback. And we will be hoping that we do not find
any, but….<br />
<br />
And in the meantime</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="color: blue; font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

The Lake District with its network of small farms and field systems is more or less dominated by Ash (<i>Fraxinus excelsior) </i>and</span></span><span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial; font-size: 10pt;"> nearly all of the mature trees in the farmed landscape are also ash! <br />
The Georgian property of Wordsworth house in Cockermouth, William Wordsworth childhood home, had a new addition to their garden last year. Three hens joined the team of dedicated garden staff and volunteers, doing their bit to help control garden pests by eating any that they were given. The fine looking ladies were an attraction in their own right and proved very popular with visitors as well as those who work in the gardens but late in the season all was not well.<br />

<br />
Despite having the finest hen house, carefully made the Georgian way with hand made nails and native hardwood timber, one of the hens had 'flown the coup' seeking an adventure of her own, perhaps inspired by Wordsworth's famous poetic descriptions of the lake district on the doorstep. <br />
<br />
Fearing that she had been stolen, a safer place was sought for the remaining two birds to overwinter and they came to stay with my flock in the woods. Just days later the missing hen Hetty was found, she was in the building next door to Wordsworth house where she had been eating flys and spiders to her heart's content. Being a rare breed Scott's dumpy hen (one of only a few breeds of hen kept in the Northern England in Georgian times) and not having especially long legs seemed to have limited how far she was able to "wander lonely as a cloud"<br />
<br />
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
Reunited with her hen housemates Poppy and Maisey, all three have been happily scratching and pecking ever since and after a busy summer season in the Wordsworth House garden being admired by many and eating as much as a hen can, they are back in the tranquillity of the wood for another winter. </div>

boundary fence at the top of Kirkclose Wood by Buttermere, luckily as it was
quite a steep walk up to site, the materials had been flown in previously,
unluckily they had been dropped a considerable distance away!! So first we were
forced to make far too many trips up and down the hill with posts and wire.</div>

The location over Whitehaven's historic harbour gives great views of everybody's fireworks around the georgian town.<br />
<br />
Next years bonfire will go on tour starting in Whitehaven on Friday the 1st of November and moving to Keswick the next day on Saturday the 2nd of November 2013.<br />

If you need an emergency job doing just call our two Rangers Jack and Andy. Over the summer we have had jobs coming in left right and centre. Here's a wee taster! First job was to pull a dead sheep out of Derwent water that started to smell not at all like the new fragrance by Lacoste. The second job was to unblock one of our donation cairn's. So we set off down to Friar's Crag with Anthony one of our foresters. Using the foresters tractor to lift the cairn on to the trailer we took it to the bank,also known as Bowe Barn! Once it was back at Bowe Barn, Andy and John started to dismantle the bottom part of the cairn. Once they had removed a few stones they were able to get access to the box, which then allowed them to prise the box open at which point they thought it was job done. How wrong were they, they then found out that it was blocked at the top. So we tried all sorts, threading wire down, rocking it side to side. Nothing worked, so I came up with the idea to get the pressure washer that we use to clean our vehicles to blast the money out. The picture above shows the process of using the pressure washer. After a couple of blasts we did manage to unblock it, with a few notes getting wet in the process, and the workshop slowly turning into a lake. We did find the reason why it was blocked up. Somebody thought it was too easy to put an old boat time table into a bin so he thought he would put it in our cairn instead!<br />
<br />
The next job was to go and repair a gate and rails that had been partially demolished by some seriously poor driving on the
Catbells road. Perhaps they had been distracted by the view! So we set off with some new rails, posts and straining post. The first job was to get the old straining post out for which we had help from Peter Edmundson, our local tenant whose gate we were repairing. Next we put the straining post into the hole that the old post came out of, phew no digging. This was then followed by retensioning the wire to the new straining post. Lastly we nailed new rails on, taking time to line them up properly to make the field stoke proof. The two pictures below show a before and after. <br />
